This breed was formerly named the Illyrian Shepherd Dog when first recognized by the FCI in 1939. The name was changed in 1957 to Yugoslavian Shepherd Dog Sharplanina, after the Sharplanina mountain range where the breed is.

The Sarplaninac is a very large breed of dog with males standing an average of 24 inches tall, weighing between 77 and 99 pounds. History. The Sarplaninac breed originated in Southwest part of Kosovo and Northwest region of Macedonia. This geographical area was once known as Illyria and was the original name for this breed. These dogs used to work in the Shar Planina mountains in modern Macedonia and thus were named after the mountain ranges.
